I’ve been rebuilding my basement. We first moved into our house in 2004. We used to have a smaller, one-story ranch house, but Kim and I decided we wanted a larger home for our growing family.

So, toward the end of 2003, we moved out of our ranch house and had it torn down. Over the next year, we had a new house built on the property.

It was the summer of 1981. I was going into in my junior year of high school when one event changed the course of my life forever. I grew up in Edgemere, Maryland, just outside of Baltimore. Edgemere was a relatively quiet town — a suburb with rows of homes and plenty of yards for the neighborhood kids to run around in. It was a slice of Americana.

Early last month, I attended a conference in Denver where they brought in Jesse Itzler as the keynote speaker. Jesse is the cofounder of Marquis Jet, a company he helped build from scratch only to sell it to Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway five years later. I hope everyone’s new year is off to a great start! My year began on an interesting foot. During the holidays, we had an office get together. After the party, I was putting a table away when it slipped

The start of a new year is a time of beginnings. It’s about making positive changes and resolutions. But even with all this talk of change and setting goals, a lot of people don’t follow through. By the middle of February, about 80 percent of people have given up or forgotten about their resolutions, according to U.S. News & World Report.

Several weeks back, I met with a good friend who’s a two-star general and a pilot. He graciously offered to take me and my kids out flying in his plane. I took him up on the offer, and we got together on a cold, windy Saturday
for the flight. We showed up bright and early at the Leesburg Airport, ready to go. But before any of us hopped onto the plane, we gathered around and watched as the pilot prepped his plane for the flight
